For two days, I tasted wines from the 2023 vintage from UGCB members at Cité du Vin in Bordeaux, the venue seen from the top of Hotel Renaissance.
I spent two weeks in Bordeaux in April 2024, where I had the opportunity to taste over 350 barrel samples from the 2023 vintage. Many of these were tasted two or three times at different locations. I also had the chance to retaste several wines from vintages 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022.
You may be curious about how the 2023 red vintage turned out. It is splendid and fabulous in many places. These wines are pure, ripe, elegant, tender, and sophisticated, with finesse and a velvety texture. The expressive fruit conceals the tannins well, and the wines have an excellent acidity that leaves you wanting more.
The only aspects missing in the 2023 vintage that would make it truly exceptional are consistency and improved quality among the lower-ranked appellations. After tasting several bottled wines, I can confidently say that the 2023 vintage on the Right Bank is comparable to 2022, while on the Left Bank, 2023 is slightly less impressive. The 2023 vintage has greatly benefited from barrel aging and has shown substantial improvement compared to barrel tastings. I find some similarities between the 2023 and 2016 vintages: subtle construction, beautifully shaped tannins, impeccable balance, and perfect acidity. Thanks to this balance and acidity, the wines will keep for a very long time!
The key to making successful wine in 2023 for a winemaker was careful maceration/extraction and using less oak than in the 2022 vintage to get the perfect expression of fruit and gentle tannin. The Right Bank, particularly Saint Emilion and Pomerol, produced some of the best wines in 2023. While there is more consistency among wines on the Right Bank, it does not mean that wines on the Left Bank are of inferior quality; they are just not as consistent in every commune/district.
The 2023 vintage is an excellent year for dry and sweet whites! The weather conditions during the growing season and harvest have been quite favorable. The white grapes are perfectly healthy and incredibly aromatic.
The weather was typical for the season in the first four months of the year, and the flowering progressed quickly, promising generous yields. However, high temperatures and rainfall caused mildew outbreaks, affecting some appellations more than others.
July and August were hot and dry, while September had moderate temperatures, ensuring perfect ripeness, healthy grapes, and abundant quantities. The red grapes were not small, had less sugar (0.5-1%) than in 2022, and achieved perfect acidity.
The quality and consistency of the 2023 vintage are lower than those of 2022. However, the ideal acidity in 2023 gives the wines a fresher, more vibrant taste. The fruit's purity, tenderness, and striking elegance are the hallmarks of the vintage for me. Many properties created wines that were equally stunning to those of 2022, and in several cases, even slightly better. This is especially evident in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol. You will find overoaked and over-extracted wines across Bordeaux in 2023, but they are in small numbers.
I won’t compare 2023 to any other vintage; it has its specific flavor and style!
Primeur prices are generally down by 25-40% compared to f.i. 2022 The primeur campaign had ended by mid-June.
Due to a lack of time and logistical limitations, I didn't manage to taste big names like f.i. Ducru Beaucaillou, Leoville Lascases, Pavie, and Troplong Mondot from the barrel. I hope to taste them later at the first given opportunity.

98-100p - perfectly made wines, well on the way to becoming legends.
96-98p - truly remarkable wines with a lot of style and class, great potential, and fabulously made.
94-96p - very focused wines with great precision, personality, and complexity.
92-94p - remarkable wines with style and grace.
90-92p – well-made wines with nice character and focus.
88-90p - admirable quality.

BORDEAUX (RED AND WHITE) AND BORDEAUX SUPERIEUR
Cos d'Estournel blanc : 70% Sauvignon Blanc + 30 % Sémillon. It is fresh and intense on the nose, with citrus, lemongrass, and pineapple notes. The palate offers crispness, great acidity, and a rich, energetic profile with a sophisticated touch. It finishes long and lemony. Terrific stuff. 95p.
Pavillon Blanc de Château Margaux: 100% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a great intensity of green apple, acacia, and pineapple aromas. Well-matched acidity, vibrant with tension and complexity. Lingering finish with a hint of lemon. Impressive for the vintage. 95p.
Valandraud white: 53% Sauvignon Gris, 40% Sauvignon Blanc, and 7% Semillon. Intense aromas of acacia flower, grapefruit, and pineapple fill the nose. Lively and multi-faceted on the palate, with splendid complexity, acidity, and an energetic aftertaste. Superb effort. 95p.
Aile d'Argent: It's a white wine from Mouton Rothschild. 50% Sauvignon Blanc, 44.5% Semillon, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 0.5% Muscadelle. Notes of lemongrass, citrus, and pineapple appear on the nose. It has splendid acidity on the palate, is crisp, savory, and complex, and finishes with a lingering aftertaste. Superb effort. 94p.
Le Nardian: 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Semillon, and 15% Muscadelle. It boasts a robust aroma of pineapple, citrus, and peach. The palate offers a crisp, complex profile with refreshing acidity. The aftertaste has a subtle oak note. Terrific effort. 94p.
Aile d'Argent: It's white wine from Mouton Rothschild. Lemony, citrus, pineapple, bright acidity, crisp, vibrant, savory, complex, and lingering aftertaste. Superb effort. 93-94p.
Les Champs Libres: 100% Sauvignon. Grapefruit, green apple, crisp and fresh on the palate, fine acidity, vibrant, well-structured, lingering finish. It is a delightful wine and a perfect seafood companion. 93-94p.
Pagodes de Cos white: 80% Sauvignon Blanc + 20% Semillon. It's very pineapple and lemony on the nose. Rich and well-balanced on the palate. The acidity is well-present, keeping everything in perfect shape. It’s a lovely second wine of white Cos d'Estournel. 93p.
Les Perrières de Lafleur: 100% de Bouchet (Cabernet Franc). Aromatic, blueberries, and blackberries. It has remarkable acidity, is sappy with grainy tannin, and has a well-defined structure, with a persistent finish. Delicious effort. 92-93p.
Virginie de Valandraud white: It's the second label of white Valandraud. 70% Semillon + 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Fresh and lively, with aromas of pineapple and grapefruit, fine acidity, and a crisp, delicate palate, finishing with a caressing lemony finish. Fine. 92-93p.
Grand Village white: Exotic on the nose. Freshly cut pineapple, acacia flower, and lemongrass. Crisp with fine acidity. Refreshing, lemony aftertaste. Well-made. 92-93p
Fleur Cardinale white: 57% Sauvignon Blanc + 43% Semillon. It’s the first white vintage from the property, made from 6-year-old vines. The nose has notes of acacia, white peach, and grapefruit. The palate is fresh and crisp, with fine acidity, balance, and a caressingly lemony finish. Not bad for a debut vintage! 92p.
S de Suduiraut dry white: 100% Sémillon. It is exotic on the nose, with dried apricot, pineapple, and pear, fine minerality, acidity, soft texture, and a delicate aftertaste. Fine effort. 92p.
Suduiraut dry white Vieilles Vignes: 57% Sémillon + 43% Sauvignon Blanc. Pineapple, green apple, acacia flower, fine acidity, crisp and delicate on the palate, long lemony finish. It was a fine effort as well. 92p.
Clos de Beau Père white: 50% Sauvignon Gris and 50% Sauvignon Blanc. It has an aroma of pineapple, lemongrass, and citrus. It is fresh and crisp on the palate, with fine acidity, and has a lemony aftertaste. Adorable. 91-92p.
Stella Solare (white wine from Croix de Labrie): Exotic on the nose with mango, pineapple, and white peach. Crisp, sleek, and harmonious on the palate with fine acidity. Notes of lime on the aftertaste. A nice companion to seafood. 91-92p.
Tronquoy white: 51 % Sémillon + 49% Sauvignon Gris. Acacia flower, pineapple, and lemongrass. Mineral and crisp on the palate, with fresh acidity and a lemony finish. Well done for a first vintage. 91-92p.
Clos de Lune d’Or: 100% Sémillon. Similar to d’Argent, it has a touch of sweetness and more intensity. Delicate finish. It suits shellfish dishes well. 91p.
Domaine de Cambes: This is part of the Roc de Cambes vineyard, located on the banks of the Gironde River. Seductive black cherries, velvety texture, silky fruit and tannin, and lush finish. Very attractive. 91p.
2022 - 92p.
De Birazel Cuvee Auguste: 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Carmenere. Very cherry on the nose, plush and tender, savory, delicate fruit, smooth tannin. It's a nice, seductive wine. 90p.
Clos Lune d’Argent: 70% Sémillon + 30% Sauvignon Blanc. Acacia flower. Lemongrass, pear, pleasant, nice acidity, soft texture, tasty, smooth finish. 90p.
Penin: Flowery and aromatic, attractive, good acidity, round and tasty, good balance. Nice. 90p.
Pey La Tour Reserve des Chateaux: Similar to Penin in terms of aromatic profile and taste. Attractive. 90p.
Sainte Barbe: It has an attractive cherry nose and fine fruit intensity on the palate, with nice acidity, structure, length, and finish. Tender. Fruity finish. 90p.
Bad Boy Chardonnay: It only undergoes alcoholic fermentation. Exotic with notes of guava, papaya, and white peach. Crisp, pleasant, and tasty. A terrasse wine. 89p.
Virginie Thunevin: It's floral, with raspberries, refreshing acidity, a silky texture, and a smooth finish. It is pleasant and inviting. 89p.
A Nous Amours: Barrel-aged Lafon Fourcat. An upgrade from the standard cuvée with more concentration and length. Subtle oak with a vanilla note on the aftertaste. 88-89p.
Bad Boy Syrah: Fresh, recognizable flavor of the grape variety, soft fruit, and tannin, nice concentration, pleasant, and tasty. Nice. 88p.
De Reignac: It has a nice fruity nose, polished on the palate with soft tannin. Smooth, charming, and pleasant. 88p.
Clarendelle red: Cherry nose, soft, tender, tasty, and pleasant wine. For drinking young. 87p.
Clarendelle white: Nice fruity wine with an aroma of pineapple. Fresh, tasty, and pleasant. 87p.
Lafont Fourcat: It is a flowery, pleasant, round, and tasty wine with a good structure and a fruity finish. 87p.
Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux and Côtes de Bordeaux
Reaut: It is flowery on the nose with violets, energetic and tender on the palate with crunchy fruit and well-integrated acidity. It has a fine, persistent aftertaste. 91p.
Carat: Special cuvée of Reaut. It is similar to the standard bottling but more concentrated. Oak currently dominates the palate, but I think it will blend well with fruit later. 91-92p.
Renon Grande Reserve: 70% Merlot + 30% Cabernet Franc. There is greater intensity and better structure here than in the standard cuvee. Easy going. 91p.
Renon: 100% Merlot. Catchy wine with black fruit, plush and tender, and a tasty, fruity finish. Nice. 90-91p.
Reynon: It is an attractive wine with fragrant blackcurrants, nice acidity, and a smooth finish. 90p.
Sauternes and Barsac
A big bunch of impressive wines!
Climens: This is the second vintage under new ownership. It is a staggeringly stylish wine with great finesse and richness, a sophisticated touch, great sweetness, and remarkable acidity. 98p.
De Farques: The wine displays a high intensity of botrytized flavors such as heather honey and candied orange peel, with the acidity perfectly complementing the sweet fruit. It exhibits excellent complexity, richness, and length and is sophisticated and refined, with a luxurious finish. It was a beautiful effort. 97p.
Lafaurie Peyraguey. Intense aromas of sweet oranges, candied apricots, and heather honey. It is concentrated on the palate with remarkable acidity, flair, and grace. Layered, great complexity, and sophisticated touch. Sublimely long finish. 96-97p.
Suduiraut: Intense on the nose with acacia honey, candied apricot, and mango. The palate has great complexity, structure, and length, where acidity and sweetness make a great pair. Vibrant, refined, and sophisticated. Fabulous stuff. 96-97p.
Clos Haut Peyraguey: It is an utterly impressive wine with a hugely intense nose of sweet pineapple, acacia honey, and candied peaches. On the palate, there is a perfect combination of remarkable sweetness and acidity, vibrancy, complexity, and length. Long, honeyed finish. 96p.
Raymond Lafon: It is a subtle and sophisticated wine with botrytized guava, candied oranges, and dried apricot aromas. It has fine acidity, vibrancy, finesse, and a honeyed finish. Excellent effort. 96p.

Coutet: This wine presents intense aromas of sweet grape, guava, and mango on the nose. The palate has splendid complexity, remarkable acidity, sweetness, a sophisticated touch, great balance, and a long, honeyed finish. It's a classy and wonderful effort. 95-96p.
Doisy Daëne: Very intense on the nose, with sweet grapefruit and orange peel flavors. A great acidity perfectly matches sweetness, vibrancy, finesse, and great length on the palate. Exotic fruit aftertaste. Simply superb. 95p.
Rayne Vigneau: This wine offers abundant aromas of sweet grapefruit, apricot, and honeydew. On the palate, it has a great balance, remarkable acidity, and sweetness that work well together. There is great complexity, vibrancy, and a delightful honeyed aftertaste. A glorious effort. 95p.
Doisy Dubroca: A 1.5-hectare property planted with 100% Semillon, adjacent to Doisy Daëne and owned by the same proprietor, showcases a similar style and splendid quality. A real gem of a wine! 94-95p.
Guiraud: It offers intense flavors of sweet grapefruit and honeydew, with a layered, refined palate showcasing great bright acidity, pleasing sweetness, and a lingering finish. Delicious stuff. 94-95p.
Doisy Vedrines: A third property from the Doisy family, producing a delightful 2023 vintage wine with a fine aromatic profile of sweet pineapple, candied orange peel, and a vibrant palate with fine acidity and complexity. 94p.
Sigalas Rabaud: A splendid nose of honey melon, heather honey, and candied orange peel, well-defined on the palate with fine acidity and balance, layered, striking complexity, finesse, and a long, lingering finish. Stellar wine. 94p.
La Tour Blanche: It offers notes of sweet pineapple and guava on the nose. It is nuance-rich, with finesse, a fine interplay between acidity and sweetness, complexity, and a sophisticated touch. Splendid effort. 94p.
Bastor Lamontagne: It has botrytized aromas of sweet grapefruit, orange peel, and candied apricots. Delightful sweetness and corresponding acidity. It is complex, with a lovely honeyed finish. Delicious. 93p.
Broustet: It's quite intense on the nose, with flavors of acacia honey, honey melon, and peach. It is flavorful and layered on the palate, with fine sweetness, acidity, and a honeyed aftertaste. This is the best effort for this property in recent years! 93p.

Graves red and white:
Chantegrive red: Fragrant blackcurrants, elegant, plush, silky texture. It has a nice ripe tannin and fruity aftertaste. Charming effort. 88-89p.
Chantegrive white: Acacia flower and grapefruit on the nose. Subtle, delicate, well-defined, and crispy on the palate, with fine acidity and a lemony aftertaste. Well-made. 92p.
Ferrande red: It is also aromatic, with spicy red fruit, a nice structure, and a smooth aftertaste. Nice and pleasant. 88-89p.
Ferrande white: It offers fresh pineapple, citrus, and lemongrass notes. It is crisp and well-knitted on the palate, with nice acidity and a lemony aftertaste. Lovely wine. 91p.
Rahoul red: It's flowery with fragrant violets on the nose, silky texture, and tender and seductive with a delicate aftertaste. 88-89p.
Rahoul white: It shows freshness, grapefruit, and citrus, and is well-assorted on the palate with fine acidity, crisp fruit, and a lemon custard finish. It is quite an adorable effort. 91p.
Pessac-Leognan red:
Haut Brion: 52.3% Merlot, 38.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9.1% Cabernet Franc. 14.6% alcohol. It exhibits highly aromatic blackcurrants, with notes of leather, tobacco leaf, and cigar box. It has great acidity, a strong backbone, exceptional complexity, and is vibrant and sophisticated, with a long and sensual finish. It's spectacular for the vintage. 98+p.
2021 - 96+p.
La Mission Haut Brion: 52.7% Merlot, 29.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 17.7% Cabernet Franc. 14.5% alcohol. With over 20% less Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, one would expect a softer wine from this estate than its 2022 counterpart. However, this is not the case! The wine is tighter and will benefit from extended cellaring. It offers plenty of blackcurrants and cherries on the nose, with tobacco notes. The wine is mineral-driven, vibrant, complex, refined, and has a fine midpalate. It finishes with a long aftertaste. Overall, it's a sublime wine. 98p.
2021 - 95+p.
Reception room at Haut Brion
Carmes Haut Brion: 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot. 13.5% alcohol. This wine differs from the powerful 2022 version, offering tenderness, delicacy, finesse, and elegance. Still, its aromatic profile is intact, with fragrant morello cherries and blackcurrants. It's savory, vibrant, and sophisticated on the palate, with a very long aftertaste. It is almost as thrilling as its one-year-old brother. 97-98p.
Domaine de Chevalier: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% of both Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. 13% alcohol. I tasted it at Cité du Vin, and the property had the same impression. It has an intense nose of blackberries and blueberries and a hint of tobacco. Lively and tender with great mid-palate, finesse, elegance, and sophisticated touch. It has a long and mouth-filling aftertaste. Terrific stuff. 97p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
Haut Bailly: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. It shows tenderness, elegance, and finesse in 2023, contrary to its normally tight, intense, and concentrated appearance, as seen in vintages like 2022 or 2020. But don't be fooled; there's a solid backbone, many layers, a great mid-palate, and a long, persistent aftertaste. It was a fabulous effort. 97p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
Smith Haut Lafitte: It's an intensely aromatic wine with blackcurrants and tobacco on the nose. It has a fine structure and depth, with a long finish and crunchy blackcurrants on the palate. It exhibits great length, discreet acidity, and well-integrated oak. Superb. 97p.
Pape Clement: Intense blackcurrants, tobacco, and graphite are evident on the nose. It has a subtle and mineral character with a fine structure, backbone, and midpalate, leading to a persistent finish. This version of the property's wine is elegant and tender. Superb. 95-96p.
Malartic La Graviere: It offers a fine blend of blackcurrant and mint flavors, accompanied by tobacco notes, a refreshing minerality, crunchy blackcurrants, a well-defined structure, and a long finish. The acidity is subtle, with well-integrated oak. Persistent aftertaste. Lovely effort. 94-95p.
Seguin: 58% C. Sauvignon + 42% Merlot. Blackcurrants, blueberries, and tobacco on the nose, with smoky, vibrant, and bright acidity, a silky texture, a fine midpalate, and a long finish. An elegant and finesse-clad version in 2023 compared to the powerful 2022. Well-crafted effort. 94p.
Carbonnieux: This wine has a fragrant nose with ripe blackcurrants and raspberries. It is tender, well-structured, and juicy, with a fine midpalate. The crunchy fruit flavor is well balanced by bright acidity, and the aftertaste is subtle. I think the 2023 vintage here is well on par with 2022! 93-94p.
Larrivet Haut Brion: Raspberry drops, aromatic and seductive, tender and elegant, finesse, lively, tasty, velvety texture, lingering finish. Splendid. This property has been offering great value for money in recent vintages. Superb. 93-94p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
La Louviere: It has a delightful nose of ripe berries and violets, a well-knitted, silky texture, fine-grained tannins, and a polished palate with fine length and a lingering aftertaste. This wine is always of great value for the money. 93-94p.
Le C des Carmes Haut Brion: 60% C. Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 2% P. Verdot. 13% alcohol. It displays spicy blackcurrants and tobacco, freshness, fine acidity, crunchy red berries, velvety texture, fine balance, and a lingering aftertaste. Fine effort. 93p.
Le Clarence de Haut Brion: 57.5% Merlot, 40.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3.6% Cabernet Franc. The blend has almost twice as much Cabernet Sauvignon as in 2022. Spicy blackcurrants on the nose and tobacco leaves, lively, well-structured, and complex on the palate, with velvety tannin and a mineral aftertaste. Splendid second wine of Haut Brion. 93p.
2021- 91-92p.
Latour Martillac: It is flowery with aromatic blackcurrants on the nose, tasty, lively, with discreet acidity, elegant, lighter than usual, and a bit short on the aftertaste. 92-93p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
Haut Bergey: It displays blackcurrants and violets, a minty flavor, is lively, well-assorted on the palate, has fine acidity, a velvety texture, and a complex, persistent aftertaste. Lovely wine. 92p.
La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion: 48.3% Merlot Noir, 38.8% Cabernet Sauvignon et 12.9% Cabernet Franc. Spicy blackcurrants and morello cherries on the nose, nice tension and freshness, nice acidity, well-defined and smooth on the palate, nice length, and a persistent finish. 92p.
2021 - 91p.
L'Esprit de Chevalier: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. 14% alcohol. It displays plenty of crushed blackcurrants and tobacco and is juicy and well-balanced. Vibrant, complex, and bright acidity. Fine second wine for Domaine de Chevalier. 92p.
Haut Bailly II - second wine from Haut Bailly. 64% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Spicy blackcurrants and violets, tender, lively, and well-structured on the palate, with a persistent aftertaste. Splendid effort. 91-92p.
De France: It has a delightful nose of ripe berries and violets, is well-knitted and tender, has a silky texture, grained tannin, a polished palate, and a smooth aftertaste. Admirable stuff. 91p.
Lespault Martillac: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 14.5% alcohol. It has aromatic blackcurrants and blueberries on the nose and is mineral, lively, and well-structured on the palate, with nice acidity, gentle tannin, and a smooth aftertaste. Admirable effort. 91p.
Olivier: It displays a seductive blackcurrant and violet nose and a polished palate with silky fruit and discreet acidity. It's quite an adorable effort. 91p.
Cruzeau: Fresh, spicy blackcurrants, crushed rocks, sappy, tender, nice structure and balance, soft tannin, smooth finish. 90p.
Haut Bacalan: Fragrant black fruit and notes of tobacco on the nose. It's a polished, tender palate with velvety tannins and nice acidity. Adorable wine. 90p.
Rochemorin: This wine displays aromatic black fruit, tobacco, and notes of smokiness on the palate. It's nicely knitted on the palate with a silky texture, a good bite, and a sleek aftertaste. Admirable effort. 90p.
Domaine de La Solitude: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 14% alcohol. Spicy black fruit with gentle tannin, juicy, nicely structured on the palate, and has good length and a fruity aftertaste. Pleasant and tasty. 89p.
Clarendelle Pessac-Leognan: The Clarendelle line is a wine produced from purchased grapes in the area. It is vinified by the same team as Haut Brion/La Mission Haut Brion and made to be consumed young. It's a blend of 86.2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.2% Merlot. It is aromatic with smoky blackberries, pleasant and smooth on the palate, tasty, and has a cherry finish. 88-89p.
Picque Caillou: It's a pleasantly aromatic, nicely constructed, and lightly textured wine, with a round, pleasant finish. Tasty. Correct wine, but it could have had more concentration and length. 87-88p.
Pessac-Leognan white:
It's an excellent vintage for white wine, and I think it's even better than 2021.

Malartic Lagraviere: It is full-bodied with a deep nose of pineapple and lemongrass. Vigorous, detailed, and complex on the palate, with a sophisticated touch. Great acidity and crisp fruit. Long and caressing aftertaste. Classy wine! 96p.
Pape Clement: This intense and potent wine has bright acidity, vibrancy, and crispness, featuring plenty of grapefruit, citrus, and lemongrass notes. It has a robust structure, subtle oak, and a long, lemony finish. It's an excellent effort. 95-96p.
Latour Martillac: This wine displays strong aromas of acacia flowers, pineapple, and citrus. It has fine acidity, a lively and dynamic palate with subtle oak, fresh fruit, and a citrusy aftertaste. Larrivet Haut Brion: This wine has an intense, delicate aroma of acacia flower, grapefruit, and lemongrass. La Louviere: It is intense on the nose with a strong aroma of pineapple and pear, crisp fruit, sublime complexity, bright acidity, elegance, and finesse. This property's white wine never disappoints and has always been a great value for money. 94-95p.
Carbonnieux: It displays an intense nose of grapefruit and citrus, has fine acidity, and is vibrant and tense. Complex on the palate with freshness and crisp fruit. Lemony aftertaste. Superb. 94p.
L'Esprit de Chevalier: 65% Sauvignon Blanc + 35 % Sémillon. It has an intensely flavored nose of pineapple, citrus, and lemongrass and is mineral, detailed, and well-assorted on the palate. Pique Caillou: This property seems to make better white wine than red! This wine displays a distinct nose of grapefruit and citrus, a crisp taste, and nice acidity. It is lively, with a good structure and a lingering finish. 92p.
Bouscaut: There is freshness, pineapple, lively, crisp fruit, refreshing acidity, minerality, and complexity. Lemony finish. 91-92p.
De France: This wine has an attractive nose of acacia flower and freshly cut pineapple. Acidity is well-presented. Crisp and lively, with a pleasant lemony finish. 91-92p.
Domaine de la Solitude: 65% Sauvignon Blanc + 35 % Sémillon. It resembles Lespault Martillac but is slightly lighter on the palate and shorter on the aftertaste. It's crisp and tasty. Catchy wine. 91-92p.
MEDOC/HAUT MEDOC
La Lagune (HM): Tasted at the property and Cité du Vin. 65% Cabernet Sauvignon + 35% Merlot. I can't deny that La Lagune is one of my favorite wines. It's unbeatable in terms of quality for money. This property usually offers precise, elegant, and refined wine. In 2023, it is very aromatic, with spicy blackcurrants and violets, great acidity, vibrancy, and a long finish. It's so classic and almost on par with 2022. It may excel after bottling. 95+p.
Additionally, I tasted the magnifique 2022 (96p) and terrific 2021 (94-95p).
Cantemerle (HM): It has a sublime cherry nose and is elegant with finesse. It is plush, tender, sappy, subtle, and silky, showing bright acidity, fine structure, balance, and length. For me, it surpasses its 2022 counterpart! Heartbreaker wine. 93+p. It was retasted in Copenhagen at the beginning of September 2024 and showed even more complexity than in April 2024. 94p.
Beaumont (HM): It has attractively aromatic cherries and violets on the nose. Plush, tender, lively, and well-assorted on the palate, juicy and well-balanced. Delicate cherry finish. This wine has a nice personality. 92p.
De Lamarque (HM): Fragrant blackcurrants and crushed black cherries, mineral, minty, and smoky, well-defined, delicate, and complex on the palate. Silky texture and persistent finish. It's a characterful wine. 92p.
G d'Estournel: 64% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It's a gentle, elegant version featuring aromatic blackberries and raspberries, with a well-integrated, well-structured palate. Attractive stuff. 91p.
La Tour Carnet (HM): Spicy black and redcurrants, lively, nicely constructed, tender, energetic, nice acidity, silky texture, harmonious, smooth finish. Nice effort. 91p.
La Tour de By (M): It displays blackcurrants and crushed rock, tobacco, nice acidity to keep everything in good order, nicely structured, sappy, good length, smooth tannin, and a fruity finish. 91p.
Cambon La Pelouse (HM): Black cherries and violets on the nose. It is sappy and smooth on the palate, has nice acidity, and is well-defined with a nice structure. Adorable effort. 90-91p.
Belle Vue (HM): It is similar to CLP, with less fruit intensity and a shorter finish. It's equally smooth and tasty. 90p.
Coufran (HM): Aromatic black fruit and violets on the nose, tender and sappy on the palate, gentle, tasty, nice structure and length. Fruity finish. Adorable. 90p.
Belgrave (HM): I expected more from this property. It's an OK wine with tasty black fruit, a smooth texture, a round, pleasant mouthfeel, and a nicely structured, fruity aftertaste. 89-90p.
De Camensac (HM): Fragrant black fruit and violets on the nose, tender on the palate, tasty, nice structure and length. It's a bit light. Fruity finish. Charming. 89p.
Citran (HM): The same description as de Camensac. 89p.

Fourcaus Dupre (L): It has more intensity and length here than Fonreaud, with tasty and delicate fruit, soft texture, and a lingering finish. It is quite well-made. 90-91p.
Fonreaud (L): Crushed rocks, crunchy berries, savory, smooth tannin, elegant, plush, delicate aftertaste. Admirable effort. 90p.
Clarke (L): Aromatic and spicy blackcurrants, nicely structured and balanced, velvety texture, smooth aftertaste. 89p.
Chasse Spleen (M): Morello cherries have a reasonable structure, are tasty, soft fruit, and have a smooth tannin. Charming but lightfooted. 88p.
Poujeaux (M): Similar to Chasse Spleen. 88p.
Macaillou (M): Black cherries, pleasant and round, forward, round, easygoing, tasty, fruity finish. It tastes a bit diluted. 87-88p.
Fourcaus Hosten (L): On the light side, it has a slightly short and dry aftertaste. 86p.
MARGAUX
Chateau Margaux: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. 13% alcohol. Only 41% of the harvest went into Grand Vin. It is a true candidate to be the wine of the vintage! It is an immensely sophisticated, elegant wine full of grace and finesse, with fabulous complexity and mid-palate. The aftertaste lasts more than one minute. This wine will surely give the 2022 version a run for its money!! 99p.
Palmer: 46% Merlot, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot. 14% alcohol. This wine closely resembles its 2022 counterpart. It is a textbook Margaux with elegance and finesse, sophisticated touch, grace, complexity, great midpalate, perfect acidity, and a mesmerizing aftertaste. 97-98p.
Rauzan Segla: This is an elegant version compared to the powerful 2022. It offers finesse, discreet oak, tenderness, and a splendid midpalate but loses none of its weight. 96-97p.
Brane Cantenac: Aromatic cherries and blackcurrants on the nose. It has elegance and finesse, is sophisticated, has splendid complexity, great acidity, and a great midpalate. Persistent finish. It is a superb and classy effort. 96p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
d'Issan: I didn't have the opportunity to taste it in Bordeaux during primeur in April 2024, but it showed up at a Beyerman tasting in Copenhagen in September 2024. I was rewarded with a terrific performance: a complete wine with a seductive blueberry nose, tension, elegance, finesse, a rich palate, and a lush aftertaste. Fabulous effort. 95+p.
Pavillon de Margaux: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.14.1% alcohol. There is more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and less Merlot than in 2022. One might expect a powerful, tight wine, but it is not. It follows the vintage's pattern with tenderness, elegance, and finesse. Fine acidity, midpalate, and complexity fulfill this splendid wine. 94p.
Alter Ego: 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot. 14% alcohol. Fresh, aromatic blackcurrants and fragrant violets on the nose; graceful on the palate, with elegance, finesse, bright acidity, polished tannins, well-structured, and a lingering finish. Splendid. 93-94p.
Lascombes: This property changed hands in 2022, and Axel Heinz took over winemaking duties for the 2023 vintage after Dominique Befve left the property in September 2023. I tasted the wine twice: at Cité du Vin and the Rolland tasting at La Dominique. There has been a noticeable change in style, from an exquisite, flashy, perfumed wine to a more intense one. Axel Heinz has made rigorous selections concerning parcels to be included in the Grand Vin. Only the parcels around the property made it. 93-94p. Marquis de Terme: Pretty aromatic on the nose with black fruit. Delicious on the palate with finesse and elegance, gentle fruit, and velvety texture. Fine acidity and structure. It has a delicate yet long finish. 93-94p.
Cantenac Brown: It displays fragrant blackcurrants and cherries. The palate has crunchy fruit, subtle oak, fine structure and complexity, well-integrated acidity, and a delicate aftertaste. Pretty wine. 93p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
Dauzac: Aromatic nose of black fruit and tobacco, fresh, lively, and gentle on the palate with fine structure and balance, bright acidity, fine midpalate, grained tannin, and persistent aftertaste. Fine quality here. 93p.
Desmirail: Similar to Dauzac, it has more floral aromas. Slightly less refined and shorter on aftertaste. 92-93p.
Kirwan: Lovely nose of blackcurrants and violets. Sappy, elegant, vibrant, and well-defined on the palate, with a fine length and lingering finish. Fine. 92-93p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
Marquis d’Alesme: This wine resembles Labegorce (the same owner) but has more flesh and length. Pretty too. 92-93p.
Prieure Lichine: It displays an attractive nose of violets and blackcurrants, is juicy and silky on the palate, soft with bright acidity, fine structure, and a delicate finish. Fine wine. 92-93p.
Labegorce: Fragrant and floral with delicate flavors, this wine has crunchy fruit, subtle oak, fine structure, complexity, well-integrated acidity, and a delicate aftertaste. It is a pretty wine. 92p.
Rauzan Gassies: It has a seductive nose of blackcurrants and is gentle and nicely structured on the palate, with nice acidity, midpalate, and a smooth finish. It's pretty, but rather light. 91-92p.
Du Tertre: Similar to Rauzan Gassies. It's a pretty wine, too, but light-footed. 91-92p.
D'Angludet: It has a delicate cherry nose, is tender and accessible, and has crunchy berries on the palate, a silky texture, nice acidity, discreet oak, and a smooth cherry finish. Adorable wine. 91p.
Monbrison: Morello cherries. Sappy, nicely structured, lively, tasty, velvety texture, smooth finish. It's a bit lightweight. 91p.

Leoville Barton: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc, 13% alcohol. Aromatic cherries and blackcurrants are covered with grated chocolate. Great complexity, midpalate, and structure. Ripe black fruit fills the whole palate. Discreet oak and integrated acidity. Long aftertaste. 95-96p. Gruaud Larose: This wine is potent on the nose with intense blackcurrants, tobacco, and graphite. It is graceful, polished, and well-knitted on the palate, with fine acidity, midpalate, and long finish. Splendid effort. 95p.
Branaire Ducru: Aromatic blackcurrants on the nose, graceful with finesse on the palate, tender, well-structured, refined, sleek with fine balance and delicate finish. Splendid effort. 94p. It showed even more complexity when retasted in Copenhagen in September 2024. 94+p.
Gloria: Fragrant black fruit, violets, tobacco, fresh, sappy, vibrant, complex, delicate fruit, gentle tannin, and well-built. Smooth finish. Well-made. 93p. Retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
Lagrange: It has attractive aromas of black cherries and violets. It has a velvety texture with gentle tannins, is lively, and is well-structured. It's a light-footed wine but a nice one to taste. 92p. It was retasted in September 2024 in Copenhagen with an identical performance and rating.
PAUILLAC
Pichon Comtesse: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. 13% alcohol. I had the opportunity to sample both wines at Cité du Vin and at the vineyard itself. The nose is characterized by an abundance of black cherries and blackcurrants, complemented by hints of truffles, mint, and tobacco. The wine boasts an impressive structure, finesse, and elegance, with a seamless, sophisticated palate and a long-lasting aftertaste. This is undoubtedly an outstanding wine that stands up to the 2022 version. 98-99p.
I also tasted another superstar, 2022 (98-100p), and the "cool" 2021 (95p).
Mouton Rothschild: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. 13.3% alcohol. Potent and distinguished. Plenty of blackcurrants and crushed cherries spiced up with tobacco, graphite, and leather. Powerful on the palate with great structure, complexity, depth, and length. Vibrant, sophisticated, and with excellent mid-palate. Badass wine. 98+p.
Lafite: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13.2% alcohol. It is rawer and oakier than in recent vintages but is still multi-dimensional and sophisticated, with excellent midpalate, perfect acidity, and a mega-long aftertaste. Fabulous stuff. 98+p.
Latour: 92.3% Cabernet Sauvignon + 7.7% Merlot. 13.2% alcohol. It is an elegant version of this First Growth, with intense blackcurrant notes, finesse, tenderness, a sophisticated touch, and a multi-layered palate. There is a remarkable purity, midpalate, and acidity. Impressive effort. Long finish. Stupendous wine. 98+p.

Carruaders de Lafite: 60% Cabernet. Sauvignon + 40% Merlot. 13.2% alcohol. There are plenty of blackcurrants and notes of graphite and leather, concentrated and lively on the palate, with a strong backbone, bright acidity, and a persistent finish. Super second wine. 94p.
Les Forts de Latour: 55.8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40.2% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. 13.7% alcohol. It retains the style of Grand Vin, featuring flowery notes, softer fruit, and tannin, and is more tender on the palate. 94p.

Reserve de La Comtesse: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. 13% alcohol. Les Tourelles de Pichon Baron: 72% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% alcohol. Softer and lighter than Griffon. More tender, too. It's well-assorted on the palate, smooth, and has a fruity finish. Quite attractive. 91-92p.
Lynch Moussas: Fresh, aromatic, savory blackcurrants and cherries, elegant, well-knitted,minty, tender, and polished on the palate with silky tannin and a soft finish. 91-92p.
Pibran: 54% C. Sauvignon + 46% Merlot. 13.1% alcohol. Aromatic blackcurrants and violets, gentle and polished on the palate, with velvety tannins, fine complexity, and well-integrated acidity. Fine effort. 91-92p.
Pauillac: 61.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34.1% Merlot, and 4.7% Petit Verdot. 13.5% alcohol. This is the third wine from Latour and is similar in style to the property's other wines. The only differences are in intensity, concentration, the use of young vines, and length. It doesn't need much time to be ready to drink, as it will mature quite early. 91p.

Lynch Bages: I am confused about this wine. On two occasions, it failed to display its usual qualities at Cite du Vin and Hangar 14 tastings. I have to retaste it shortly. 90+-?
Croizet Bages: It is significantly lighter and less impressive than the 2022 from this property. Aromatic with ripe fruit, savory and tender on the palate, but skinny and short on the aftertaste. It may benefit from aging in the barrel. 90-92p.
Moulin de Duhart: 55% Merlot + 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. The blend has 30% more of the latter, resulting in a powerful wine with a solid backbone and a meaty finish. 89p.
Pastourelle de Clerc Milon: Blueberries and blackberries on the nose, sappy, spicy, nice texture, pleasant, gentle, sleek, caressing finish. Catchy wine. 89p.
SAINT ESTEPHE
Montrose: 75% C. Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. 13.6% alcohol. Forget the power and tightness that you normally associate with this property! This Montrose is the epitome of elegance and finesse, with a deep, sophisticated layer, velvety texture, awesome midpalate, perfect acidity, and "invisible" oak. It is so different from the gigantic 2022, but it's equally fantastic in 2023! Liquid cashmere. 98-99p.
Cos d'Estournel: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 12.9% alcohol. It has a floral aroma with violets, crushed cherries, mint, and tobacco. Delicate yet intense, vibrant, complex, and sophisticated on the palate. Long and persistent finish. Very impressive effort. 98p.
Calon Segur: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. 14% alcohol. It perfectly blends power and elegance, with great tension, minerality, plenty of blackcurrants, great complexity, and an impressive midpalate. It is almost as impressive as the 2022 version. 97-98p.
Phelan Segur: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted at Cité du Vin, Hangar 14, and at the property with the same result. This time, the wine isn't as strong and full-bodied. Instead, it's a lighter, elegant, refined version. It has crushed morello cherries on the nose, is juicy, vibrant, complex, well-structured, and tender on the palate, and offers fine complexity and a persistent finish. Splendid. 94p.

Les Ormes de Pez: This wine has a very cherry aroma with hints of tobacco and mint. It has a juicy palate with well-integrated acidity, tenderness, and energy, and is well-balanced. The finish is very pleasing. It's a very adorable effort. 92p.

L'Église Clinet: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 14.6% alcohol. This wine is a close rival to the mind-boggling 2022 vintage. It's a powerful yet elegant wine with plenty of black cherries and blueberries, spiced with grated dark chocolate. It’s a juicy, intense, multilayered, finesse-clad, sophisticated wine with excellent mid-palate and a mesmerizingly long finish. Awesome wine work! 98-99p.
Lafleur: 54% de Bouchet + 46% Merlot. It is dense, multidimensional, aromatic, and powerfully balanced with elegance, finesse, and tenderness. Velvety texture. You don’t feel tannin and oak on the palate. Perfect acidity and an awesome midpalate sum it all up. It is more accessible than the muscular 2022. Fabulous stuff! 98+p.
After tasting barrel samples from 2023, I had the opportunity to taste 2020 and 2019 Lafleur. The multidimensional 2019 (99-100p) and its sibling 2020 (99-100p) were a heavenly treat.
Petrus: 100% Merlot. It is softer and more elegant than 2022. It has intense notes of black cherries, blueberries, and violets, with velvety tannins, finesse, and incredible complexity. It is sophisticated, focused, and precise, with a refreshing finish. Wonderful effort. 98p.
Le Pin: 100% Merlot. 14% alcohol. It has fragrant aromas of violets and black cherries. Acidity is perfect and keeps everything in place. The tannin is barely noticeable, the structure is seamless, and there is excellent mid-palate vibrancy and a sophisticated touch. Amazing stuff. 98p.
La Conseillante: 88% Merlot + 12% Cabernet Franc. 14% alcohol. It is very aromatic on the nose, with violets and iris, blueberries, and blackberries, delicate and distinguished on the palate, with terrific elegance and finesse, sophisticated touch, and richness. Liquid cashmere. Long and lingering aftertaste. It's a fascinating effort, just a notch below the 2022 vintage in quality. 97-98p.
Trotanoy: 100% Merlot. It has an intense aroma of wild cherries, violets, dark chocolate, and coffee beans. The wine is juicy and fleshy yet elegant on the palate, with great complexity, a strong mid-palate, and a strong structure. It needs several decades to mature. In terms of quality, it is just behind the 2022 vintage. 97-98p.
Vieux Château Certan: 82% Merlot + 18% Cabernet Franc. 14% alcohol. Intense violet and blueberry notes are present on the nose. It is distinguished and tender on the palate, with a mineral character, great complexity, and a vibrant, superb mid-palate, culminating in a long and persistent finish. Fabulous stuff. 97+p.
L'Evangile: 78% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. Violets, morello cherries, truffles, elegance and finesse, many layers, and a sappy, vibrant, sophisticated, persistent finish. It continues the refined and elegant style first seen in the 2022 vintage. Formidable. 97p.
La Fleur Petrus: 96.5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 0.5% Petit Verdot. It has dark chocolate, crushed cherries, and blueberries, with violet notes on the nose. It is juicy and complex on the palate, with fine tannins and a long finish. Superb effort! 97p.
Clinet: 75% Merlot + 25% Cabernet Franc. 13.7% alcohol. Aromatic black cherries mixed with violets and truffles on the nose. It is juicy on the palate, has great structure and length, is vibrant, complex, and has a long aftertaste. Terrific stuff. 96-97p.
Ronan Laborde makes a top Pomerol wine at Clinet.
Clos L'Eglise: This property is located on the left side of the road across from L'Eglise Clinet, in the hamlet of Clinet. Helene Garcin-Leveque owns Clos L'Eglise, Barde Haut, and Poesia in Saint-Emilion. The blend comprises 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the highest-ever CF contribution. 14% alcohol. The nose is aromatic, with black cherries and black truffles. It is potent, juicy, and mineral on the palate. You can taste the soil! There is great length, vibrancy, and complexity. This is a formidable effort and true to the style of Pomerol. 96+p.
At my request, Helene Garcin-Leveque opened four additional vintages of Clos L'Eglise: 2021 (93-94 points), 2020 (97 points), 2019 (96 points), and 2018 (96+ points). These wines confirmed the exceptional quality of this property's offerings.
Petit Village: It's the first vintage with a biodynamic vineyard certificate. I tasted it both at the property and at the UGCB tasting at Le Gay and got the same impression. 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.5% alcohol. It's powerful, with a big palette of aromas, including violets and wild cherries. It is a bold, vibrant wine with a strong backbone, a fluent midpalate, and a long and persistent aftertaste. Excellent effort. 96+p.
La Croix St. Georges: 100% Merlot. 14.1% alcohol. It's more elegant and tender than usual, with plenty of creamy black cherries and blueberries, notes of dark chocolate, grained tannin, lively, bright acidity, excellent complexity, and a long-lasting finish. It is almost as impressive as the 2022 version. Great work from Jean-Philippe Janoueix. It is superb for the vintage. 96p.
Bourgneuf: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. I tasted it on three occasions: at the property, Jean-Pierre Moueix, and Grand Cercle, and the wine was truly impressive everywhere! It is beautifully scented and intense on the nose, with black cherries, blueberries, violets, and black truffles. I am trying to remember any recent vintages of Bourgneuf having such a broad aromatic palette. It is coated on the palate with great complexity and structure, a splendid midpalate, silky tannin, and a lingering finish. A winner! 95-96+p.
At the property, I have additionally tasted the fabulously made 2019 (96p), a bit restrained 2020 (95p), and 2021 (93p).
Frederique Vayron is the winemaker at Bourgneuf. 2023 marks her 16th consecutive vintage.
Certan de May: 65% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has an expressive nose of aromatic black cherries and fragrant violets, with added notes of black truffles. It is sappy, has a fine midpalate, is velvety, graceful, and complex, with a lingering finish. Superb. 95-96p.
Le Gay: Tasted twice. It's more tender and elegant this time. Well-integrated acidity and oak. Fragrant cherries and violets, juicy, grainy tannin. Well-constructed and complex, lingering finish. Splendid effort. 95p.
Belle Brise: This small property is located on the outskirts of Libourne, close to Route Nationale 89, with exceptional soil. It should be more well-known because the quality here is high. Very cherry (both black and morello) and fragrant violets. Elegant with finesse and purity, vibrant, complex, and precise. Grained tannin. Lingering finish. Lovely and seductive stuff. 94-95p.
I also tasted the superbly crafted 2022, which had already been bottled in March 2024. 95+p.
Sacre Coeur: 100% Merlot. 14.15% alcohol. It is floral on the nose with fragrant violets, juicy and well-knitted on the palate, with a velvety texture and refreshing acidity. Elegant with a cherry aftertaste. Very fine indeed. 94-95p.
Seraphine: 100% Merlot. 14.5% alcohol. This property is located in the hamlet of Plince, and the first vintage under Martin Krajewski's ownership was 2017. It has been named Seraphine after his Polish grandmother, Seraphina. It is very aromatic on the nose, with black cherries mixed with grated dark chocolate. Elegance, finesse, silky tannin, vibrant, velvety structure, and a lingering finish. It's a superb effort that, in my opinion, surpasses the 2022 vintage. 94-95p.
Martin Krajewski kindly offered me to taste two additional vintages of Seraphine, including the very aromatic and subtle 2019 (93p) and the more intense 2020 (93-94p). Thanks a lot!

La Pointe: It displays aromatic black fruit and fragrant violets. It is sappy, well-defined, vibrant, elegant, and has much finesse. Tender and with a silky texture. It has a refreshing acidity that complements the ripe fruit. Has a smooth cherry aftertaste. Terrific effort. 94p.
Beauregard: 74% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.5% alcohol. 100% more Cabernet Franc in the blend compared with 2022. It’s expressive on the nose, with aromatic black fruit (blueberries and blackberries) and notes of milk chocolate. It is quite powerful on the palate, with a truffle scent, fine complexity, and a meaty aftertaste. It's an outstanding effort. 93-94p.
Cantelauze: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. It has a beautiful cherry nose with notes of violets and black truffle, fine acidity, and silky tannin on the palate. There is a fine balance, complexity, structure, and a lingering aftertaste. It's on par with 2022. 93-94p.

La Commanderie: Cherries and flowery (roses), fresh, pleasant, seductive. It is quite nicely structured, charming, and tasty. 90p.
Mazeyres: It is similar to La Commanderie, with violets and a silky texture. Polished and smooth on the palate. 90p.
L'Innocence de Seraphine: 75% Merlot + 25% Cabernet Franc. 14% alcohol. Fragrant violets and tasty blueberries have a nice acidity and a silky texture. It is a very seductive, delicate wine that is not overly complicated. It will provide immediate pleasure once in the bottle. 88-89p.
Maillet: It has a captivating nose of violets and blueberries, and it is polished on the palate. It has tasty fruit and a nice structure. The aftertaste is dominated by oak. Modern style. 90p.
La Cabanne: Fragrant cherries on the nose, elegant and tender on the palate, pleasant but lightweighty and short on the aftertaste. Sadly enough, this property has been underperforming of late. 87p.
SAINT EMILION
In 2023, this district has been remarkably successful, consistently delivering excellent quality and several potential candidates for the title of "wine of the vintage." Many other wines are notable contenders as well.
Ausone: It was a great visit! I spent one hour with Edouard and Constance Vauthier, during which I enjoyed tasting their 2023s. The Grand Vin is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, with an alcohol content of 14%. This blend has the highest Cabernet Franc percentage in recent years. Although the 2023 Ausone is delicate, it should not be underestimated due to its underlying power and intensity beneath its elegant, finesse-clad, and sophisticated core. The wine has an extremely seductive floral aroma (violets!) with great complexity, sublime structure, and excellent acidity. Huge amounts of fruit perfectly balance the oak. The aftertaste won’t end. It is difficult to say if it is better than the 2022s, but we will know that after bottling. 98-99p.
Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse): Josephine Duffau-Lagarrosse continues her fairy tale. She produced exceptional wine in 2023, agonizingly close to her stunning effort in 2022. This wine comprises 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, with an ABV of 14%. The nose is utterly expressive and fragrant, with scents of black cherries, violets, and iris. It is pure, graceful, elegant, and sophisticated on the palate. The wine has excellent acidity, a rich mid-palate, and silky fruit, all enveloped in velvety tannins that gently caress your palate. The finish is long and mesmerizing, and the wine tells you to come back for more! 98-99p.
Josephine is replacing the old vinification cellar with a new one this summer (2024). The new cellar will increase the number of vats from 9 to 16 (mainly the concrete ones), as she wants to extend parcel-by-parcel vinification to more vats. She has also planted more Cabernet Franc in the vineyard.
2023 Croix de Beausejour, Beausejour's second wine, blends 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and has a fragrant bouquet of raspberries and red currants. The palate shows a silky texture, crunchy fruit, and a lingering aftertaste. It is a captivating wine. 91p.

Cheval Blanc: 46% Cabernet Franc, 52% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13.8% alcohol. It has a burst of fragrant violets and roses on the nose, accompanied by aromatic cherries and raspberries. The blend showcases the Cabernet Franc, which is particularly noticeable. The wine has a perfect structure on the palate, with a fabulous mid-palate and silky texture. It is vibrant. The finish is so heartfelt. It’s an incredibly fascinating wine. 98-99p.
I also tasted the 2021 vintage. Sublime, subtle, and elegant. 96+p.
Figeac: It's the 130th vintage of the Manoncourt family. The blend consists of 42% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, with an alcohol content of 13.5%. The wine has a delightful aroma of raspberries, violets, and iris. It is subtle and mineral on the palate, with great depth and structure, an excellent mid-palate, silky texture, grained tannins, and an exquisitely long aftertaste. I expect this wine to compete with the 2022 vintage to become the best Figeac produced recently. This is an outstanding effort. 98-99p.
Frederic Faye, the manager at Figeac, was kind enough to let me taste the 2021 and 2020 vintages. 2021 was formidable all the way, and I rated it 96p. 2020 was captivating and a sheer delight for the senses. 98+p.

Angelus: Stephanie Rivoal de Bouard, CEO of Angelus since 2012, has transformed this property into a refined, intellectual wine in recent vintages by increasing Cabernet Franc and using considerably less oak. Benjamin Laforet, the young winemaker since 2017, does a great job at Angelus. The wine is 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, there are intense morello cherries and raspberries, while on the palate, it's elegant and plush, with a strong backbone, great complexity, sophisticated touch, and finesse. It has a great mid-palate and long aftertaste. This is a stupendous quality. 98p.
After a barrel sample of 2023, I enjoyed 2021 Angelus, a silky, sophisticated wine that tasted even better now than it did from the barrel. 96-97p. During lunch, I was treated to a wonderful bottle of the 2000 Angelus, which was truly spectacular and timeless. 99p.

Tertre Roteboeuf: Excellent news for fans of flamboyantly flavored fruity wines from this property! Francois Mitjaville has crafted an iconic 2023 vintage! The wine had a powerful aroma of black cherries and violets. The palate was rich and seductive, with excellent complexity and seamless structure. Silky berries and grainy tannin. Sophisticated touch. The finish was long and caressing. As usual, it was an utterly expressive effort from Francois Mitjavile. 97-98p.
The 2022 TR I tasted afterward was a dream wine, with more intensity and length than the 2023 vintage. 98+p.

Belair Monange: 98% Merlot + 2% Cabernet Franc. It is very aromatic on the nose, with black cherries and violets, and is delicate, vibrant, and sappy on the palate. It has great complexity, length, finesse, velvety tannin, and a long, lingering finish. This is a very impressive effort for the vintage. 97-98p.
Beausejour Becot: 77% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14% alcohol. It's the first vintage vinified in the new cellar. Significant improvements have been made since Julien Barthe became the general manager of this property in 2016. In 2018, a new technical director joined the team, and together, they oversaw a modernization project that included the construction of a new underground cellar. While 2022 is an exceptional year for B. Becot, 2023 also promises to be entirely exciting (an expressive wine with finesse) and gets a rating of 97+p.

Pavie Macquin: 82% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.1% alcohol. It is quite flamboyant, with a great nose of aromatic morello cherries and raspberries, with great acidity, midpalate, structure, and length. It has a delicate raspberry aftertaste. Fabulous stuff. 97p.
Valandraud: It has a very complex nose with an intense aroma of morello cherries and fragrant violets. There is a refreshing acidity that connects extremely well with lush fruit and velvety tannin. Splendid complexity and fabulous structure, great midpalate, and long aftertaste. Highly impressive. 97p.
Croix de Labrie: 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.2% alcohol. It has a great nose with intense notes of black cherries, blueberries, and violets. The wine is expressive with great finesse and elegance, a velvety structure, grained tannins, fine acidity, and an intense finish. Well done, Courdurie couple! 96-97p.
Le Dôme: My friends and I tasted Jonathan Maltus's wines together with his very knowledgeable son, Jack. 80% Cabernet Franc + 20% Merlot. 14.1% alcohol. It is intense on the nose, with notes of crushed cherries, black truffles, and violets. On the palate, it is concentrated, splendidly structured, and vibrant, with a great mid-palate. It has great refreshing acidity, length, and a long finish. Formidable. 96-97p.

Clos Fourtet: Tasted twice with the same impressive result. Delicious on the nose with cherries, raspberries, and violets. Elegant with finesse. Acidity is well-integrated. Great complexity and midpalate. Long and persistent finish. Excellent effort. 96+p.
Corbin: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 13.4% alcohol. This is a subtle and captivating wine with pure finesse and elegance, great balance, and a velvety texture. It has a broad palette of aromas, especially violets and iris. The perfect acidity, vibrancy, and "invisible" tannin make this wine an utterly seductive "catch." As impressive as 2022! 96p.

Larcis Ducasse: Very aromatic and expressive on the nose, with blueberries and raspberries. Otherwise, it is similar to Pavie Macquin in appearance and quality. Both properties share the same winemaking team. 95-96p.
Fleur Cardinale: 56% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% alcohol. It is seductively aromatic, with scents of raspberries, roses, and violets. Sappy and perfectly balanced, displaying expressive fruit, silky tannins, and bright acidity. It finishes with a lingering and persistent aftertaste. Quite delicious! 95p.
La Couspaude: Tasted twice, this wine has fragrant notes of wild strawberries and spicy raspberries on the nose. It is well-knitted, juicy, tender, elegant, with finesse, splendidly structured, and has a lingering finish. It's a gorgeous wine. 94-95p.

This wine offers a very distinct cherry nose with violet notes. The palate is tender and silky, with splendid complexity and structure. The aftertaste is long-lasting. Larmande: There are aromas of violets and crushed dark berries on the nose. The wine is vibrant, tender, and complex on the palate, with finesse, elegance, and a persistent finish. Overall, it was a terrific performance. 94p.
Mazerat: Ex. Vieux Château Mazerat. 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 13.9% alcohol (1.6% less than in 2022!). There are intense raspberries, crushed redcurrants, and violets on the nose. Laroze: It's a very stylish wine for the district. Delightfully aromatic on the nose, with crushed cherries and raspberries; tender and polished on the palate, with grained tannin. There is a lot of elegance and finesse. Complex and subtle. Caressing finish. 93-94p.
De Pressac: This wine exhibits abundant aromas and flavors of morello cherries and raspberries. Velvety tannins and lively acidity complement these. The wine displays excellent structure, subtle complexity, and perfect balance. The finish is enduring, making it a splendid wine. 93-94p.
Quinault L'Enclos: 67% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 16% Cabernet Franc. It has a beautifully scented nose of black cherries, blueberries, and violets. De Fonbel: The wine is 64% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Carmenere. Compared with the 2022 blend, this one has almost three times more Cabernet Sauvignon. It's very raspberry on the nose, with notes of milk chocolate. It has a juicy, tender palate with a nice balance, structure, acidity, and length. Attractive. 90p.
Roc de Candale: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 14.5% alcohol. It is aging in concrete vats, with no oak. It features fragrant cherries, violets, and roses, along with gentle, tasty fruit and a silky texture. Nice acidity and balance. Very seductive. It’s a great value for the money. 90p.
Saintem Saintayme: 100% Merlot, 14.6% alcohol. Aromatic cherries and violets, nice acidity, lively, plush, and silky tannin. Delicate. Cherry finish. Seductive and friendly. 90p.
Tour Baladoz: It has aromatic red berries and violets and is lively, elegant, tasty, and well-made. Soft tannin. 90p.
Yon Figeac: Similar to Tour Baladoz, this wine is tender, pleasant, and tasty, with a silky texture, nice structure, and a delicate raspberry finish. 90p.
La Grace Fonrazade: Licorice, black and red fruit, lively, plump, pleasant, nicely structured, with a fruity finish. Smooth finish. 89-90p.
No. 3 d'Angelus: 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Morello cherries, tender, silky fruit, and smooth tannin. It is tasty and seductive on the palate. Delicate aftertaste. 90p.
3 de Valandraud: It shows aromatic black fruit, is round and gentle on the palate, delicate and tasty, and has a pleasant, fruity finish. 89p.
Petit Cantenac: 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14% alcohol. It is a fruity, pleasant, and charming wine with a silky texture and an inviting cherry finish. Nice. 88p.
Clarendelle St. Emilion: 77% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Malbec. Spicy raspberries, soft, tender, tasty, and pleasant wine. For drinking young. 87p.

Here are some memorable and precious moments I experienced during two weeks of primeur tastings in April 2024:
1. On Saturday, April 20th, a highly thrilling evening in excellent company took place at Domaine de Chevalier. The theme was wines from different vintages, all of which had one thing in common: the vintage on the bottle ended with "4". Although I didn't take notes, some wines stood out in my memory, including L'Eglise Clinet 1964 (Belgian bottling from Hannapier), Figeac 1964, Belair 1964, and Lafite 1914. A big thank you to Olivier Bernard for an unforgettable evening!
2. On Monday, April 22nd, Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux organized a glorious welcome evening for the press and chateau owners in beautiful surroundings at Leoville Poyferre in Saint Julien. I managed to taste some exciting wines, for instance. La Lagune 2000, Giscours 2010, Coutet 2009 and Suduiraut 2017.
3. On Friday, April 19th, Bill Blatch and Jean-Pierre Meslier arranged an exciting vertical tasting of Raymond Lafon in 21 vintages over several decades, from 2023 to 1979. This tasting was a fascinating parade of high-quality sweet wines. Read more in the section "Horisontal and vertical tastings"
Food:
1. I love to eat at La Table de Catusseau in Pomerol. It is run by the immensely talented chef Kendji Wongsodikromo (originally from New Caledonia) and his wife. The food is so tasty, delicate, highly flavored, and colorful! On Tuesday, April 16th, Dominique Vayron, Frederique Vayron, and I had a great time eating lunch there and enjoying several vintages of Bourgneuf. This restaurant is extremely popular, and booking a table well in advance is very advisable.
2. Lunch at Logis de la Cadenne with Léa Bodin and Benjamin Laforet from Angelus on Wednesday, the 23rd of April. This restaurant got a new chef in September 2023, and his specialty is fish dishes. We had an excellent meal, accompanied by the amazing 2000 Angelus and the rare 2021 white Angelus.
3. Lunch at the restaurant Politena in Getaria, a beautifully located fishermen's village some 30 km along the coast from San Sebastian.
Vacations:
Every other year, after sampling a new vintage from the barrel in Bordeaux, I take a 3-4 day break in San Sebastian. It's about a 2.5-hour TGV train ride to the border town of Hendaye and then a 30-45-minute local train ride to the center of San Sebastian. San Sebastian is a beautiful, relaxed town known for its food, including pintxos and regional cuisine.

Wines from the 2023 vintage (bottled) tasted in Bordeaux (October 2025) and in Copenhagen (November 2025 - January 2026)
After tasting several bottled wines, I can confidently say that the 2023 vintage on the Right Bank is comparable to 2022, while on the Left Bank, 2023 is slightly less impressive. The 2023 vintage has greatly benefited from barrel aging and has shown substantial improvement compared to barrel tastings. I notice some similarities between the 2023 vintage and that of 2016, such as grace, finesse, superb structure, beautifully shaped tannins, and perfect acidity.
2023 L'Église Clinet Pomerol: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 14.6% alcohol. This is a powerful yet graceful wine with plenty of black cherries and blueberries on the nose, spiced with grated dark chocolate and black winter truffle. It displays a wonderful focus and great precision. It’s an intense, vibrant, mineral, multilayered, finesse-clad, sophisticated wine with exceptional mid-palate and a mesmerizingly long finish. This wine is, in my honest opinion, as stunning as the mind-boggling 2022 version. A legend in the making! 2035- 2065. 100p.
2023 Beauséjour St. Emilion: This is a heavenly delight, I have to say. This wine is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, with an alcohol content of 14%. The nose is incredibly expressive and fragrant, displaying scents of black cherries, violets, and iris. On the palate, it is pure, graceful, elegant, and sophisticated. It has a sensual complexity marked by precise fruit flavors, minerality (limestone), and velvety tannins, all embraced by excellent acidity. The finish is long and mesmerizing, leaving you wanting more. It matches the 2022 version fearlessly and deserves a rating of 99-100 points.
2023 Figeac: 42% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc, and 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.5% alcohol. This wine is now bottled, and it tastes truly stunning on both the nose and palate. It displays a fabulous aroma of raspberries, fragrant violets, and iris. On the palate, it is subtle and sublime, showing incredible vibrancy and structure. The mid-palate is excellent, with a silky texture and an exquisitely long finish. This is an outstanding effort, potentially matching or even surpassing the exceptional 2022 vintage. It could become the best Figeac produced in recent years. Rating: 99-100 points.
2023 Château Margaux: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. 13% alcohol. Only 41% of the harvest went into Grand Vin. It is a true candidate to be the wine of the vintage! It is an immensely sophisticated, elegant wine full of grace and finesse, with fabulous complexity, mid-palate, and cashmere-like texture. The aftertaste lasts more than one minute. 99-100p.
2023 Mouton Rothschild: 93% Cabernet Sauvignon + 7% Merlot, 13.3% alcohol. Rich and distinguished on the nose. Plenty of blackcurrants and crushed cherries spiced up with tobacco, graphite, and leather. Powerful on the palate with great structure, complexity, depth, and length. Vibrant, sophisticated, and with excellent mid-palate. Badass wine. 98-99p.
2023 Tertre Roteboeuf: This wine is true poetry. Francois Mitjaville has crafted yet again an iconic wine with a powerful nose of black cherries and violets. The palate is rich, silky, seductive, and has excellent complexity, a sophisticated touch, a fabulous midpalate, and seamless structure. The finish is long and caressing. 98-99p.
2023 Cos d'Estournel: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. 12.9% alcohol. It was a very impressive wine displaying intense aromas of crushed cherries, mint, and tobacco. Delicate yet intense, vibrant, complex, and sophisticated on the palate with a strong backbone. Long and persistent finish. Outstanding effort. 98+p.
2023 Le Dôme: 80% Cabernet Franc + 20% Merlot. 14.1% alcohol. It is intense on the nose, with notes of crushed black cherries, blueberries, black truffles, and violets. On the palate, it is concentrated, splendidly structured, and vibrant, with a great mid-palate. It has an excellent acidity, length, and a long finish. Formidable effort. 97p.
2023 Bourgneuf: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. This wine is beautifully scented and intense on the nose, with black cherries, blueberries, violets, and black truffles. It has a broad aromatic palette. It is opulent and coated on the palate with finesse, vibrancy, great complexity and structure, a splendid midpalate, silky tannin, and a lingering finish. Stupendous effort. 96p.
2023 Corbin: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 13.4% alcohol. This is a sublime wine with pure finesse and elegance, great balance, and a velvety texture. It has a broad palette of aromas, especially black cherries, violets, and iris. The perfect acidity, great midpalate, vibrancy, and "invisible" tannin make this wine an utterly seductive "catch." All promises from the barrel came true. As spectacular as 2022! 95-96p.
2023 La Petite Église, Pomerol: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 14.4% alcohol. This is a second wine from L'Eglise Clinet, and what a fabulous treat! It displays an utterly expressive nose of black cherries with notes of black winter truffle. It’s potent yet elegant, with a great structure and complexity on the palate, great midpalate, and minerality. The tannins are beautifully shaped, and the acidity contributes perfectly to the wine's balance. Long finish. In my opinion, it rivals the quality of the 2022 vintage! 2032-2050. 95-96p.
2023 Haut Marbuzet: It possesses a beautifully fragrant aroma of black cherries that captivates you from the start. On the palate, it displays silky dark berries and velvety tannins, supported by excellent acidity. There is great complexity, finesse, structure, crystalline texture, and a superb midpalate. The finish is sublimely long, leaving you feeling extremely satisfied with the wine. As sensual as the 2022 version. 95+p.
2023 Cos d'Estournel white: 70% Sauvignon Blanc + 30 % Sémillon. It is intense on the nose, with citrus, lemongrass, and pineapple notes. The palate offers crispiness, great acidity, and a rich, energetic profile with a sophisticated touch. It finishes long and lemony. Terrific stuff. 95p.
2023 Beychevelle: It displays aromatic notes of cherries and blackcurrants on the nose, with hints of mint chocolate. On the palate, there is a splendid complexity, elegance, and finesse, bright acidity, gentle tannin, vibrancy, silky texture, and lingering finish. It's a very stylish and heartfelt wine. 95p.
2023 Pavillon Blanc de Margaux: 100% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a great intensity of green apple, pear, and pineapple aromas. Well-integrated acidity, crisp and vibrant with tension and complexity. Caressing finish with a hint of lemon. Impressive for the vintage. 95p.
2023 Montlandrie: 55% Merlot + 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. 14.5% alcohol. The blend for 2023 contains less Merlot and more Cabernet Sauvignon compared to the 2022 vintage. There are black cherries in spades on the nose with notes of dark chocolate, roses, and black winter truffle. It’s powerful yet graceful on the palate with splendid midpalate, bright acidity, and sublime balance. Vibrant and complex with a sublimely long aftertaste. This wine is just an excellent thrill, and it's probably the best I have ever tasted from the property! 2032-2050. 95p.
2023 Rabaud Promis: This property in Sauternes was purchased by the owners of Gruaud Larose in 2020. Since the 2018 vintage, this wine has been packaged in an eye-catching bottle that resembles crystal. The wine itself is a very impressive experience. Plenty of peaches and apricots, sweet pineapple and mango, remarkable finesse and elegance, rich, splendid acidity, and long, honeyed aftertaste. 95p.
2023 Seguin: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon + 42% Merlot, 13.7% alcohol. So fine and sensual on the nose with blackcurrants and crushed stones. Vibrant on the palate with refreshing acidity, silky texture, splendid midpalate, and long finish. Crystalline tannins. Refined and finesse-clad wine. The acidity here makes you want to come back for more. Terrific effort for this property from Canejan (Pessac-Leognan). 95p.
2023 Carbonnieux white: 68% Sauvignon Blanc + 32% Sémillon. It displays an intense nose of acacia flower, grapefruit, and citrus, has fine acidity, and is fresh, vibrant, and tense. Complex on the palate with freshness and crisp fruit. Lemony aftertaste. Superb stuff. 94-95p.
2023 Mazerat: 90% Merlot + 10% Cabernet Franc. 13.9% alcohol (1.6% less than in 2022!). There are plenty of wild cherries and raspberries with notes of crushed stones and violets on the nose. It is well-structured on the palate, with bright acidity, splendid midpalate, and a fine structure. Complex with grainy tannin and a long, spicy finish. Superb effort. 94-95p.
2023 Sociando Mallet: 50% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Cabernet Franc, 14% alcohol. It catches your attention from the very beginning. There is plenty of aromatic dark berries on the nose, and the palate is well-covered with creamy fruit, velvety tannins, and bright acidity. It’s a vibrant wine with great balance and grace. Remarkable stuff! 94-95p.
2023 Carbonnieux: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. This wine has a fragrant nose with ripe blackcurrants and raspberries. It is tender, well-structured, and juicy, with a fine midpalate. The crunchy fruit is well balanced by bright acidity, and the aftertaste is long. Splendid effort. 94p.
2023 Carruaders de Lafite: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon + 40% Merlot. 13.2% alcohol. There are plenty of blackcurrants and notes of graphite and leather, concentrated and lively on the palate, with a strong backbone, bright acidity, and a persistent finish. Super second wine. 94p.
2023 Clerc Milon: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 1.5% Carmenere, and 1% Petit Verdot. 13.5% alcohol. Aromatic blackcurrants and cherries, tobacco, and graphite. It is well-structured on the palate, with a solid backbone, sufficient oak, and bright acidity. Complex and long with a meaty finish. Terrific wine. 94p.
2023 Pavillon Rouge de Margaux: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. 14.1% alcohol. There is more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend and less Merlot than in 2022. One might expect a powerful, tight wine, but it is not. It follows the vintage's pattern with tenderness, elegance, and finesse. Fine acidity, midpalate, and complexity fulfill this excellent wine. 94p.
2023 Roc des Cambes: Made by Francois Mitjavile from Tertre Roteboeuf. It is intense on the nose, with morello cherries and spicy raspberries. Powerful structure, fine acidity, and discreet oak flavors on the palate. Fine mid-palate and persistent aftertaste. Sublime wine. 94p.
2023 Les Cruzelles: 80 % Merlot + 20% Cabernet Franc. 14.5% alcohol. This wine displays a distinctly aromatic profile of morello cherries complemented by notes of roses. On the palate, it is well-structured, complex, vibrant, sappy, and tender. The wine has a fine midpalate, subtle oak influence, velvety tannins, bright acidity, and a persistent finish. This is a great effort. 2030-2045. 93-94p.
2023 de Millery: 95% Merlot +. 5% Cabernet Franc, 14% alcohol. This property in Saint-Emilion has been owned by the Manoncourt family since 1942 and produces wine from less than one hectare of vines. It’s a lovely nose of blueberries and blackberries, subtle and well-knit palate with elegance, finesse, and velvety tannins. Lingering finish. Pretty and sensual effort. 93+p
2023 d’Armailhac: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. 13.5% alcohol. Quite aromatic with blackcurrants and redcurrants on the nose, well-knitted on the palate with fine midpalate, concentration, and length. Well-integrated oak and fine acidity. Satisfying aftertaste. Fine effort. 93p.
2023 Duhart Milon Pauillac: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon + 20% Merlot, 13.1% alcohol. The aroma features a rich blend of crushed blackcurrants and cherries. Potent, sappy, firm structure, strong backbone, fatty tannin, splendid complexity, long aftertaste. Well-crafted wine. 93p.
2023 Laforge: 92% Merlot + 8% Cabernet Franc. 14.05% alcohol. Morello cherries, raspberries, and violets are prominent on the nose. It is well-structured on the palate, displaying noticeable minerality, fine acidity, and silky tannins. The wine is complex, with depth and a refreshing aftertaste. A lovely effort. 93p.
2023 Pagodes de Cos white: 80% Sauvignon Blanc + 20% Sémillon. It's very pineapple and lemony on the nose. Layered and well-balanced on the palate. The acidity is well-present, keeping everything in perfect shape. It’s a lovely second wine of white Cos d'Estournel. 93p.
2023 Petit Figeac: 45% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a second wine of Figeac, and it is a beautifully scented, subtle, attractive, and tasty creation. There is a sufficient amount of creamy morello cherries and wild raspberries, silky tannin, and discreet acidity. It has a fine complexity, is well-balanced, and possesses a lingering finish. Brilliant effort, it is! 93p.
2023 Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. 13.5% alcohol. Quite aromatic with blackcurrants and redcurrants on the nose, well-knitted on the palate with fine midpalate, concentration, and length. Well-integrated oak and fine acidity. Satisfying aftertaste. Fine effort. 93p.
2023 Tour des Termes: 60% Merlot + 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Flowery on the nose with violets, subtle on the palate with creamy cherries, well supported by bright acidity. Velvety tannins, fine complexity, and midpalate. Lingering aftertaste. This wine has improved considerably since barrel tasting. 93p.
2023 Cos Labory: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. 13% alcohol. It's the first vintage for the new owners (Cos d'Estournel), who acquired it in March 2023. Nice cherry nose. This wine is sleek, well-balanced, and well-knit on the palate, with a fine length. Tender aftertaste. Well-made. 92-93p.
2023 La Fleur Pourret: 70% Merlot + 30% Cabernet Franc, 13.5% alcohol. Very aromatic on the nose with notes of raspberries and violets. Subtle on the palate with delicate fruit, velvety tannin, and discreet acidity. Well-balanced, with a fresh, fruity aftertaste. Lovely stuff. 92-93p.
2023 Olivier white: 80% Sauvignon Blanc + 20% Sémillon. It is quite expressive on the nose and palate, with grapefruit and lemongrass, crisp fruit, well-integrated acidity, and complexity. Lemony aftertaste. Fine effort. 92-93p.
2023 Pagodes de Cos: 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. 13% alcohol. It displays blackcurrants, violet, tobacco, and minty notes, and is juicy and well-balanced on the palate. Persistent aftertaste. Fine second wine from Cos d'Estournel. 92-93p.
2023 Amiral de Beychevelle: This wine reflects the Grand Vin in a fine manner regarding aromas, fruit silkiness, and tannins, but it is a lighter version with a shorter aftertaste. There is a velvety texture, and the acidity is perfectly incorporated. Seductive stuff. 92p.
2023 Beaumont: It has attractively aromatic cherries and violets on the nose. Plush, tender, lively, well-assorted on the palate, juicy, and well-balanced. Delicate cherry finish. This wine has a nice personality. 92p.
2023 Olivier red: 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 13.8% alcohol. It displays aromatic blackcurrants on the nose and is sappy on the palate with fine complexity, silky fruit, discreet acidity, and delicate aftertaste. Pretty wine. 92p.
2023 L’Aurage: This wine displays fragrant roses/rose bushes, ripe raspberries, silky fruit, and tannin. Elegant, smooth, and tasty. Has taken on weight and concentration during ageing in barrels. An attractive effort. 92p.
2023 La Chenade: It’s a second wine to Les Cruzelles. 100% Merlot. 14.4% alcohol. It displays spicy blackberries and blueberries on the nose and palate, with notes of violets and dark chocolate. This wine is well-structured on the palate, displaying minerality, splendid acidity, and a lingering aftertaste. A fine offering. 2027-2042. 92p.
2023 Teyssier: 80% Merlot + 20% Cabernet Franc. 14.1% alcohol. It has an aromatic nose of crushed morello cherries. There is subtlety and discreet oak, and the wine is lively, well-balanced, and well-composed on the palate, with a silky texture. Delicate aftertaste. Well-made wine. 91-92p.
2023 Domaine des Cambes: Who can resist this wine? It’s coming from the vines growing on the banks of the Garonne River, just outside the Cotes de Bourg appellation. Just after these vines, in the valley, you have Roc de Cambes vineyard! Very aromatic black cherries wrapped in milk chocolate. Silky texture. Velvety tannins are embraced by creamy fruit. Lush finish. 91p.
2023 Saintem/Saintayme: 100% Merlot, 14.6% alcohol. It shows a lovely nose of aromatic cherries and raspberries, silky texture, well-managed acidity, and silky tannin. It’s a harmonious, lively, delicate, and seductive wine with a cherry finish, seductive and friendly. Delightful stuff. 2027-2040. 91p.
