Thomas Duroux, Palmer's managing director, was quite pleased with the results of the 2024 vintage!
Vintage 2024 began with mild but wet weather. Flowering started well, but heavy rain in May disrupted the process, leading to issues such as coulure and mildew. The latter disease required several treatments, and it became clear that yields would be significantly reduced due to both coulure and mildew.
Fortunately, the vines remained unharmed throughout June, July, and August, with the latter two months being particularly warm and dry. Winegrowers often say, “August makes the must.” And it was certainly the case in 2024. Rain returned in part at the beginning of September, but it did not further damage the vines, as cool nights, windy conditions, and sunny intervals helped prevent additional diseases. It became evident that winegrowers needed to wait for optimal ripeness inside the grapes and skins. It took time, but the result was worth waiting for, as the fruit achieved splendid ripeness, and tannin is the hallmark of the vintage.
As a result, 2024 is a late-ripening vintage. During the harvest, many estates implemented sorting processes in the vineyard, including manual, optical, and densimetric methods, which eliminated grapes with low sugar content. Some did perform additional manual sorting in the cellar. For winemakers, patience, expertise, and avoiding overdoing the vinification process were crucial. Gentle extraction at low temperatures was essential, and those who managed this task effectively achieved excellent results. However, several properties needed to be used, such as upconcentration techniques and chaptalization, to increase the alcohol content.
So, how is the 2024 red vintage? It is better than I expected. Regarding weather challenges, it is similar to 2013; however, 2024 was saved by modern technology, the dry and sunny month of August, and a prolonged ripening process. Adjectives such as fresh, elegant, delicate, lively, gentle, and silky characterize most wines. Many wines, especially those from properties that cannot afford treatment costs against mildew, etc., deviate from this description by being over-extracted, green, unripe, and exhibiting dry flavors. I believe the Right Bank slightly outperforms the Left Bank in terms of wine quality.
Of course, the weather conditions didn’t allow winemakers to make another excellent vintage. So the intensity, fatness, immense complexity, opulence, and length typical of excellent vintages like 2018, 2020, and 2022 are absent in 2024. However, it is essential to note that the profoundness, charm, delicacy, and gentle touch are distinctly evident in 2024. The subtle acidity complements the wines beautifully, and alcohol levels are approximately 1-1.5% lower than in 2022. These balanced and flavorful wines will be ideal for early enjoyment and pairing with restaurant meals. Additionally, their splendid balance suggests they have fine aging potential.
The 2024 vintage surpasses 2021 due to superior fruit and tannin ripeness. It also possesses greater complexity and a more refined mid-palate than the 2021. However, it will be interesting to see how 2024 tastes after bottling and if it maintains all the good qualities it showed from the barrel.
This is an excellent vintage for dry white wines that may surpass 2021, 2022, and 2023. Sunny spells in early September contributed to perfect grape ripening, allowing them to obtain remarkable acidity and intensity.
White sweet wines experienced a fairly splendid vintage for several properties. Spells of rain and sunshine allowed botrytis to spread. They performed best when botrytized grapes with sufficient sugar content were brought in.
To attract consumers of all ages, the prices of primeurs for 2024 should decrease by 30% compared to 2022 and by at least 15% compared to 2023. We will see if it happens; if not, the primeur campaign won't be a success.
RATINGS:
100-point scale. However, I won't give any ratings of 100p, 99p, or 98p for the 2024 vintage. 97p is the maximum rating I will award. Why? The 2024 vintage, even if better than expected, is below recent vintages except for 2021. To be clear, all wines listed in this report were tasted non-blind.
WINES BY DISTRICT/COMMUNE
Unfortunately, due to limited tasting days in Médoc and logistical challenges, I was unable to visit d'Issan in Margaux, Ducru Beaucaillou and Leoville-Las-Cases in Saint-Julien, Calon-Ségur, Cos d'Estournel, and Montrose in Saint-Estèphe. However, I could taste these aforementioned wines except Montrose in Copenhagen, during the Beyerman tasting in September 2025. Figeac in Saint-Emilion is also on the visit list, as I regrettably didn't have time to visit it in April 2025.
I wrote this report while listening to high-quality rock-blues music by Laura Cox, a French-English guitar virtuoso, and Alastair Greene, a highly skilled guitarist from Texas, US. I thoroughly enjoyed their concert in Hamburg on May 11, 2025!

This 2024 is incredibly concentrated with acacia honey, honeydew melon, and guava, rich in fantastic complexity, stunning acidity, refinement, a sophisticated touch, and an endless finish. Whau! 98-99p.
The winemaker, Jean-Jacques Dubordieu, was so kind to open additional vintages of this heavenly treat. 2022 (97-98p) was similar to 2024 but featured different flavors, including heather honey, candied orange, and apricot peel. 2016 (97p) offered candied mandarin peel, candied apricot, and guava. Both were of the same fantastic quality. The 2010 was extravagant (!) on the nose and palate with a myriad of exotic flavors and tastes. Heavenly stuff! 98p. Thanks a lot, Jean-Jacques, for your generosity.

Upon my request, Simon, the cellarmaster, opened the 2023, 2022, and 2021 vintages for us to taste.
The 2023 vintage, rated at 96 points, displayed botrytized aromas of guava and mango, with a distinctly noticeable acidity. It was genuinely excellent.
The 2022 vintage is truly extraordinary; some of the harvested grapes had an incredible potential sugar level of at least 225 g/L, a phenomenon that had never been observed before at this property. These highly concentrated grapes were used for the 2022 "Crème de Tête" cuvée. I didn’t taste it; I only had the "normal" cuvée. It was exceptional, presenting delightful aromas of exotic fruits, excellent acidity, refinement, and a sophisticated touch, earning 96-97 points.
Only five hl/ha were produced for the 2021 vintage. This vintage is lighter and more elegant than the 2022 and 2023 vintages, yet it retains high quality. 94-95p.

Coutet: Orange peel, heather honey, sweet pineapple, rich and elegant. Splendid complexity. Remarkable acidity and sweetness on the palate, sophisticated touch, lovely balance, and finish. Classy and wonderful effort. 95p.
Doisy Daene: Very intense on the nose, with flavors of botrytized pineapple, sweet grapefruit, apricots, and honeydew melon. It displays excellent acidity, is refined with great length on the palate, and is complex and vibrant. Long, honeyed aftertaste. This is a remarkable effort! 95p.
I have also tasted the equally splendid 2023 (94-95p) and the sweeter, exotic, and slightly more intense 2022 (95p).
Guiraud: This wine offers intense flavors of sweet grapefruit and honey melon. It's rich and refined on the palate, displaying excellent acidity, pleasing sweetness, and a honeyed finish. Delicious stuff. 94+p.
I also tasted two superbly performing vintages: 2023 – 94-95p and 2022 - 94p.
NB. When visiting Guiraud, be sure to dine at La Chapelle, the restaurant, which serves delicious food at a reasonable price.
Doisy Vedrines: This property has produced a splendid wine with a fine aromatic profile of sweet pineapple, guava, and candied orange peel, and a vibrant palate with fine acidity and complexity. 94p.
Nairac: 100% Semillon. Jean-Marc Dulong, who manages Bastor Lamontagne and Nairac, has successfully rejuvenated Nairac, which now produces superb wines after a period of decline between 2019 and 2021. The 2024 vintage showcases vibrant citrus flavors, complemented by notes of orange peel, acacia honey, and candied apricots. It is rich, with fine acidity and a long, lingering finish. 93-94p.
I also tasted the impressively well-made vintages 2023 (94p) and 2022 (94+p).

I have also been treated by equally fine vintages 2023 (92p) and 2022 (92+p).

Cantegril: Heather honey, candied orange peel, and guava. It has good acidity, is delicate on the palate, and has a finish. Pleasant and tasty. 89p.
Broustet: Nice aromas of candied apricots and orange peel, light, supple, nice sweetness, and corresponding acidity. Tasty with a sleek finish. 88-89p.
Yquem didn’t present its 2024, but during my visit in April 2025, I was treated to vintages from 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2015. All stunning wines, with 2022 and 2015 being the crème de la crème. 2022 – 100p, 2021 (98p), 2020 (97p) and 2015 (99-100p). For more detailed TNs, see the profile of Yquem on this website.

PESSAC LEOGNAN RED
La Mission Haut Brion: 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46.5% Merlot, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc. 13.2% alcohol. It has an intense nose of redcurrants and wild raspberries, is vivid, exhibits splendid complexity, and displays a fine mid-palate. It’s a very accessible wine with great elegance and finesse. Lingering aftertaste. Superb effort for the vintage. 95+p.
Haut Brion: 47.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37.5% Merlot Noir, and 15.3% Cabernet Franc. 13.2% alcohol. You can taste the splendid ripeness of the fruit here, with fine complexity and structure. There are plenty of crushed blackcurrants well-supported by a bright acidity. The tannins are fat, and the aftertaste is firm. This wine needs time to settle down. 95p.
Haut Bailly: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. 13.5% alcohol. This is a more accessible and elegant offering from the property than usual, but the hallmark minerality remains. It has freshness, high-quality fruit, bright acidity, and is profound and delicate, with crunchy berries and a silky texture. Fine effort for the vintage. 94p.
Gabriel Vialard, Haut Bailly’s technical director, also let us taste the two excellent Grand Vin vintages: 2023 (96p) and 2022 (97-98p).
Domaine de Chevalier: Red berries, juicy, fresh, delicate tannins, and bright acidity, elegant with finesse. Silky texture. This is a well-made wine, despite the numerous weather challenges, and it is also an attractive one. To enjoy before 2022 and 2023. 93-94p.
I also tasted the fabulous 2022 vintage (97-98p).
Smith Haut Lafitte: This wine has a beautiful nose of blackcurrants, blueberries, and raspberries. It is elegant and refined. The palate is polished and vibrant with great style. It has great acidity, structure, and complexity. Delightful stuff. 93-94p.
Les Carmes Haut Brion: 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 23% Merlot. 13.2% alcohol. I tasted this wine at the property and, honestly, I found it rather disappointing. The acidity was pronounced and overshadowed the flavors, while the oak (stem taste?) masked everything else. This barrel sample did not truly reflect the estate's potential. However, there were hints of underlying potential. I give it 90p for the moment.
When I taste it again, the score can increase to 94-95 points. This can occur in September during the 2024 vintage tasting in Copenhagen.

La Louviere: Aromatic redcurrants on the nose, lively and mineral on the palate, lively, subtle, and delicate on the palate, well-defined, nice complexity, and midpalate. This property consistently offers great value for the money. 92p.
Olivier: Delightfully fruity, fresh, and attractive wine, gentle and delicate, ripe fruit and tannin. Complex and fine aftertaste. 92p.

I also tasted a rarity, a white wine made from a very old Semillon plot planted in 1884 at the property. It’s called Grapecap. On Saturday, April 12th, 2025, I had a memorable and precious experience at Domaine de Chevalier. The theme of the event was wines from various vintages, all of which shared one characteristic: the vintage year ended in "5." Although I didn’t take notes, several wines stood out and will be remembered for a long time!
Before that, a tasting of the 2024 and 2022 vintages of wines made by Olivier Bernard took place.

Afterwards, "5" tasting!
1935 Lafite white, 1925 Domaine de Chevalier, 1945 and 1955 Guiraud Sauternes, 1955 Branaire Ducru, 1945 La Croix de Gay, 1945 Latour, 1945 Beychevelle, and 1945 Palmer.

A big thank you to Olivier Bernard for an unforgettable evening!
